Geek Fu #16

Despite my initial goals when starting this podcast, I discuss podcasting in this podcast. I also mention the N&O article that came out, and give exciting news. This week’s essay is a re-print from Grumble since I’m overworked at the moment: Your podcast sucks, let me do it. And thanks to Dan Tripp of TrippOdd for the groovy intro he sent me!

The Raleigh News and Observer finally ran their article on podcasting. You can see it, and pictures of me, my dog, my daughter, and Brian and Jennifer Pipa, at their site.

I’m pleased with the article. It was less condescending that others I’ve read, and more “look out Clear Channel and NPR!”

[EDIT]
All right, dammit, first I could look at it, now it’s demanding registration. Sorry.

Also, I found it interesting that he said I was an avid role-player, but did not mention that I write for the damn things. And I even showed him a couple of my books.

Ah well. If you have found this site by way of the N&O, welcome, take a look around, and I hope you like it.

[EDIT THE SECOND]
My friend Andy, of the Podcrumbs podcast, was extremely quick to point out to me that I did not, in fact, learn about podcasting on October 28. It was October 26. He has the log to prove it. You can see the log at his Webcrumbs blog.

Actually, I have no hangover because I had one beer last night. Far cry from the St. Paddy’s days of years ago.

Anyway, this podcast was done with the cameras of the Raleigh News and Observer in my face, so pardon the frequent clicking sounds. I discuss my sadness at how St. Patrick’s Day used to be celebrated in my geeky circle of friends and what has changed and say Happy Birthday to Michael R. Mennenga, Then I air the dirty laundry about my delusions of granduer.

And I am about 12 hours worth of podcasts behind. Bleh.

Temporary single momitude. Vomiting toddlers. Another Dragon Page plug. And an essay about overwhelming liberal guilt. Here you go.

Links n stuff

I have decided that I’m going to start writing down stuff to say in the podcast, because I think of stuff all week and then when I sit down, my mind goes blank. One thing I was going to talk about, but forgot, was that Neil Gaiman is auctioning off the name of a boat that will appear in his new book. The money will go to the CBLDF, and the auction is already wayyyyy past my $50 budget.

Other things, I got a surge in listeners from Websnark, as I got snarked and I didn’t even expect to, since Websnark is a site dedicated to the discussion and analysis of online comics. Thanks, Eric!

Lastly, Russell from the Treo Podcast also gave me a very nice plug and I really appreciate it. I love his podcast, he has an excellent speaking voice (sure as hell doesn’t say “um” as often as I do) and I recommend it highly. And Russel I think think the people who bitch at you for your podcast title really need to get involved with community activism, like, say, the status of the police force in Huston, instead of venting their energy on you.

[edit: Eric Burns pointed out I really didn’t have a link to the actual podcast. Man. I blame the toddler that ate my brain. Any mother of a toddler will back me up.]

The Dragon Page’s new podcast, now named Dragon Page “Winging It”, is out. Download it to hear a you-won’t-hear-anywhere-else essay by me called “Comic Book Mommy.”

You know, I listened to this today, and suddenly it seems like Last Night Mur missed the entire point of the whole Podcast Alley thing. Not only are lots of people asking for votes, which is fine, but not something I’m comfortable doing - but also they’re pissed at the people who are driving their listeners to vote one star for the podcasts above them. And yeah, calling for bad votes for your competitors is uncool, I will agree.

And just to make sure I’m clear, I am very grateful for my listeners and appreciate you guys very much. Tons, in fact. Buckets and bucketsful of appreciation.

And the topic of today’s essay - the fact that I used to be a big ole crybaby. Sadly, the sniffles didn’t translate well into audio form without me sounding like I was snorting.
