I didn’t make it clear in this podcast that the previous podcast was about giving your stuff away for free so that *other* people could make money (example was KYOU radio, where you give them your podcast to broadcast over the air; you get nothing and the station gets any ad, sponsorship, or other revenue). I give away my writing every week, and I’ve never sold an essay.

And thanks for the info on your podcast, I’d love to check it out. The more SF podcasts out there, the better!

In my podcast The Rev Up Review, I’m currently reading instalments of my SF short story “The Journey of Jonathan Cave.” That story has been previously published, and I was paid for it. But the next story I’m going to read, “Travel With Confidence,” is unpublished (though it was accepted by a publication that folded before my story saw the light of day).

I’m doing this for several reasons:

a) To add value to The Rev Up Review;

b) To provide what is in effect a sample of my writing, so that people can judge for themselves the validity of my reviews;

c) To ‘walk the talk’: demonstrating that I am what I say I am — a writer.

So, I may not be getting paid in hard cash for the stories I’m reading in The Rev Up Review, but I’m getting other benefits: a following for the podcast, validation as an author, and my name ‘out there.’ The podosphere is as yet relatively small compared with the average slush pile, and there are opportunities to get noticed. Just look how well Scott Sigler is doing with Earthcore — consistently in Podcast Alley’s top ten for weeks now.

I’m not giving away my fiction for no return, even if it appears to be free. By making a story available bit-by-bit as part of The Rev Up Review, I’m benefiting both the story and the podcast.
