Michael - you have a good point, but honestly I can only speak for the geek pod that I belong to. I am not a math geek (although I am surrounded by them), nor a band geek or a law geek. And I do know that lots of geeks were popular in high school while I sat bitter and sad. ;) But if I were to speak to the other geeky areas, then I would very likely get something wrong...

I think that you have too narrow a view of what it means to be a geek. Your geekhood surrounds one pod of Sci-fi RPGers, etc. But every interest has its geek sect and it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with you popularity in high school. There is no necessary commonality at all between sci-fi geeks, 17th century english poetry geeks, constitutional law geeks, math geeks, etc.

If you have to, go essayless. Though I have to say this show has been my favorite thus far. I laughed, I cheered outloud and I sympathized, great stuff all around.

An essayless Geek Fu is still good Geek Fu as far as I'm concerned. I enjoy the reviews/random bits in the beginning more than enough to make up for no essay.

Dearest Mur,
Thanks for all you have given us. I do admit that I would miss your weekly podcasts and if the absence of a essay will keep you on the air, I would rather hear from you than not. But you must take care of what is important. We all know that paying the bills comes first. This member of your audience will be waiting no matter what you decide. Congrats on all your success. BTW I don't think you got into this to be one of the "cool kids", Podsquad or not you've got more class, style and substance than all of the podcasters I've heard. You will remain at the top of my Podcster list.
Thanks

Hey Mur,

good to hear so much work is coming your way. Do what you have to do. Don't worry about us. If you can't include an essay in a show we'll get over it.

Perhaps if you talked about your b**bs on those episodes that you don't have an essay we could call it even.

Just an idea.

Looking forward to you podcast from Waraji's!!

Madam Mur,
Podcast without the essay if you must, though there are too few essayists in podland.
There is a song called "Cool Kids" that might be a good theme for you:

Use a bittorrent feed. Slashdot Review is the pioneer in this technique.
I also live in Durham, over on Lakewood. We call it LakeHood.
Watch your "um"s, though you do not use them so often as some.
thank you very much for your honest sharing,
Art

Writer's Block. Gotta love it. I am also an aspiring writer. I've a suggestion for you. take it for what it's worth. Why don't you give us a weekly word count of your current WIP? Each week we, the listeners, can hound (pun intended) you, abuse you, and demand more from you. We can be that unforgiving lot that demands more writing from you on those personal projects! More Mur! More MUR! MORE MUR!

Just a suggestion.

As for a week or two without an essay. Hmm... that's a tough one. Your essays are what sucked me into the grip in the first place. Wait, that didn't come out right. Anyway, let the dog snore, ramble on, give us the weekly Mur with or without the essay. That's my opinion.

Hosting: Dreamhost is running a special right now. The bandwidth they are allowing is pretty high. You might want to check it out.

No Essay: I think it's fine without the essay for a couple of weeks. Have you considered having people submit essays, either in print or as audio files?

The Dragon Page uses libsyn.com Very easy solution to your bandwidth problem. Also, I noticed you just went from 128kbs mp3s to 64kbs mp3s. That will definitely help. Whoever suggested you do that is a brilliant and generous soul.

I loved the song! More with the singing with the notes and words and things.

www.libsyn.com bases price on the storage and not the bandwidth. For 10 bucks a month you can get 250 mb of hosting with no bandwidth charges... I dont work for them, it just seemed like a cool deal to me.
