Geek Fu #40 - Delusions of Grandeur Pt. 2
Wow. 40. Maybe I should throw a party at 50.
Geeks who run. Check out forums. And a questionable yet clever card game called Gloom.

Fans of Geek Fu Action Grip, possible (very silly) names:
Sticky Fans?
Sidekicks? (obscure ref. to Kung Fu movie)
Mur’s Munificent Many?
GF Action Figurines?
I like your essays a lot. I think you’ll get published one of these years, you’re good enough.

Other possibilities:
Grasshoppers
Poo Dodgers
Kick Ass Mysti… Wait, that one’s taken.
Murmurs
Lafferty’s Army

I think you should call your fans “Grips.” According to IMDB, a grip is “a skilled person responsible for the set up, adjustment and maintenance of production equipment on the set. Their typical duties involve camera movement, lighting refinement, and mechanical rigging.”
In other words, grips are the geeks of the movie world.
This name has the advantage of being easy to say and fit on a logo; plus, of course, it incorporates part of the podcast name.

I like the “Grips” idea for your listener tribe. Or “Fu Cru”. Heh.
From one running girl geek to another - get a digital watch with a chronometer. When you start the race, set the chrono to start timing you (this is important later). It helps you set your pace throughout the race. If you normally run a 10 minute mile, and if you get to mile marker one at 8:45, you know you need to slow down your pace. It’s quite helpful - and math oriented, so it qualifies as geeky.
When you’re running your first 5k (I had my first one this year too - ran three total!), don’t get sucked into running the pace of all the people around you. It’s seductive and you get caught up in the moment and half-way through you’ll be exhausted. I know from experience.
If you can wear a music player, and I know this will sound odd, but get music that has a beat the same pace as your running pace. It’s like geeky marching band running. It works for me anyway.
Also, if you do get tired and feel like you need to walk, check the timer on your watch and walk for only one minute. Just one. Then start running again. You don’t lose points for walking! Email me if you have questions.
Good luck and I’m anxious to hear how you do!

The comment is actually regarding “Delusions of Grandeur Pt. 1″ as heard on “Wingin’ it”: Yes, the Masonic Order is exclusively for men. However, the Order of Eastern Star is a Masonic-founded organization for women. The Order of DeMolay is a Masonic-founded organization for young men (ages 13-21) and the Order of the Rainbow for Girls is a Masonic-founded organization for young women (ages 13-21, I think). As an Order of DeMolay alumnus, I can tell you that despite being “segregated” in membership, I cannot recall an event that wasn’t organized or attended by one or more of the other groups.

I know this is a little late, but I know that you are a firefly fan. Two weeks ago the geeks at geekson had a special Firefly/Serenity episode where we had christina hendricks (Saffron/my sister) and Lisa Lassek (editor/associate producer). The next week, we did a Battlestar Episode.
Firefly special: Episode 09/26/05
Battlestar: Episode 10/03/05
Hope you enjoy

Hey Aaron, your Sister was amazing in Firefly, both eps. Stunning, and talented.

Hey Mur, about Gloom: My set of cards are designed and printed so poorly that I can’t even read the print on the cards. I’ve never played it for this reason. Just wondering how YOU actually played?

Thanks Rich. I’ll tell my sis. She will be happy to hear you enjoyed her work.
