Geek Fu #52 - Competently Incompetent
I look around and I seem to have lost my damn list of show notes…
Ah. There it is.
I bitch about politics. And crow about politics.

Last year, around this time, I had a couple of Christmas wishes. I wished for a plug from Dave Slusher, which I got in a bittersweet fashion that proved the adage of being careful what you wish for. This year I’d like more listeners, so tell a friend about Geek Fu. I’d like a book deal too, but to get that I have to get off my ass and finish editing the novel.

Well, first off, I’m a geek. And I’m an artist, a writer, and a person from the far-away northwest.
Secondly, I’m a republican. A conservative one- at least, no one has told me otherwise yet.
Weirdly, I enjoy gamer-geek podcasts so long as they don’t circle about politics (from either side). By no means try to avoid politics if it comes to your mind. Talk about it, I don’t care. I hate anyone who changes whenever one or two stray voices whine.
But, I have to be a whiner, I guess. John McCain, obviously is still a republican wholeheartedly because he agrees with the president on the war. And I would like to say a lot of people are reacting to the secularist movement against christmas (there is one, but its smaller than it really is) as a pre-emptive strike. Its the same as if PETA claimed that there was a genocidal war against frogs (which is true in certain cases). Nonetheless, my goal as a republican is point out that geekdom is far more accepting and wider than we think. Politics is really a disease.
Oh yeah. Awesome podcast, started listening after dragon’s landing suggested it.
The website I posted is the longest one I have the time to do, plus I can’t afford the equipment right now to the one I would like to do… So I have a deviantART page. Keep up the work, and remember, we conservative ain’t as evil as you think.
We’re like the Drow in that way.

Mur,
Regarding your Christmas wish for more listeners; I’ve done what I can, I talked up your show on my last podcast, and played your promo on the latest. Hope this helps.
Josh, in his comment above seems to be one who actually understands the term, conservative. It means middle of the road. I tend to lean a little right on social issues, and a little left on moral. I registered as non-affiliated 32 years ago and don’t see any reason to change that (the extremists on both sides embarass me).
But anyway, Merry Christmas, Happy Haunakah, Merry Kwanza, Happy Holidays - whatever floats your boat! Enjoy the season!

Perhaps I’m flouting my ignorance. But not only have I never read the esteemed Mister Zelasny… until today I have never even heard of Mister Zelasny and his works. And oddly enough, I think I shall not lose sleep over it. Mur, you are just fine as you are. Keep doing what you do. We all dig it, geek-chic be darned.

Hi Mur!
The Broadcaster’s Christmas Carol sounds fun! Synchronicity! It’s the third podcasted Christmas carol I’ve heard about so far. There is also “A Geek Christmas Carol” done by the Friends in Tech, at http://www.podcastingnews.com/forum/links.php?func=showfeed&id=4497
And of course, the one that I’m involved with, “A Podcast Christmas Carol” which originated at the Podcast Pickle Community. http://apodcastchristmascarol.org
Great minds think alike, eh? ^_^

I think I know how you feel about competency Mur, been there and gotten over it. I do like Tolkien and Zelazny, but on the other hand, I don’t get Philip K. Dick, and Gene Wolfe, both considered intelligent writers. I think they both have choppy writing styles and tend to spout tons of psycho-babble bull… er, ah, baloney! But I have lots of friends who think these two are the epitome of literature. So be it. But if we’re friends, we understand that we each have our own individual tastes and respect each other for that. On the other hand, if they don’t respect my taste, they’re probably not a friend and therefore not someone whose opinion of me, I care about. If they’re so f ‘ing smart, what are they doing traveling in my lowly circles?
I listen to your show because I respect your opinion and like your take on life from the “geeks” point of view (not a title I would bestow on you, but if you like it, wear it proud!). On the other hand, I’ve never been much of a gamer. I want to like it, it’s got all the earmarks of something I should like, I raised two sons who are avid gamers, I just can’t get into it… (Okay, to be fair, my dear patient wife raised the two gamers, I was working most of the time!)
Personally I feel sorry for people that turn their noses up at others, they’re closing their minds. That’s sad.

Mur,
Whether I might agree or disagree with you politically makes no difference. Your actions, as shown through your writing and podcasts, have earned you my respect. I value your opinions because I feel they are thoughful, heartfelt, and not simply soundbites. It is our actions and NOT our party affiliations that define us. Don’t hesitate to throw out your political views when you feel it is important. Geek Fu is from your heart and I’d expect nothing less.
Mike

Well-said, Mur! I totally agree with you! This whole “War On Christmas” crap is so ridiculous that those championing it don’t quite realize how foolish it’s making THEM look. Exactly who is it that’s preventing people from celebrating Christmas in this country, again??? My feeling is that you should celebrate (or not celebrate) in any way you choose, but don’t you DARE tell me how I should do that. This is not a friggin’ theocracy! And FYI, I’m a far-left liberal and there’s a Christmas tree glistening in my living room… I love Christmas!
Happy Holidays!

Just wanted to add that I enjoyed the short story of yours for episode 33 of Escape Pod (Santa in my pocket), nice to have a christmas story without a happy ending and it made me laugh too (got some funny lucks on the bus I was on). Reminded me of the Fredric Brown short story where a boy captures Santa (who is Satan) and gets turned into one of Santas reindeers.
