I liked Heaven.
I haven't thought of a title yet as I need some more of the story to come up with a really good one.

The only thought I had was something about Roads or Paths.

Mur, I can't say anything about the new (or old for that matter) Dr. Who. No television in the house means I have to wait until the DVD is released, and then I have to borrow a first episode or two to figure out if I'll want to buy it.

Anyway, I really enjoyed your story too. I'm looking forward to more of the serial episodes. Keep up the great work!

I'm right there with you as a new Dr. Who fan. ^_^

Your lament about missing the comic book store reminded me of a really interesting line I heard on NPR once (don't remember who said it): "Nostalgia is to emotion what idealism is to the intellect."

Mur, glad you're into the new Dr. I just started listening to the episode and had to pause it to comment on the Dr part of things. I enjoyed the old Doc whenI was a kid and watched it with my Dad (though I have traumatic memories of watching episodes with giant bugs that scared the snot out of young me). I can't say I waited for Sci-Fi to get them and was torn when they did. Sci--Fi getting them ment they got better exposure, but it also delayed the DVD release.

BUT ANYWAY. The thing I had to jump in and say was that I think you're going to love the Dickens episode if for no other reason than the last little scene and how well, I think, the actor caught the writer's ultimate question about their futue. I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on THAT episode especially, but the series just gets better and better and I'm SO sad to see Eccleston go as he was BRILLIANT.

Now I guess I'll go back and listen to the rest of the podcast and maybe comment on THAT later :D

Greetings Mur,

I heard your commentary on Wingin It and I just wanted to let you know that I enjoyed it a great deal. I could relate to most of the things your were talking about and I had a good laugh at work. It made the day much shorter!

Thank you and I am in touch with my inner geek. LOL

Have a good one!

Hey Mur,

Liked Heaven. I'll be interested to see where you take the storyline. People have so many ideas about what happens after death. Not being exposed to writing much, it is really refreshing to read regular "colorful" language mixed with good writing. Keep up the good work.

Hi, Mur.

Been listening for a while now. That photo of you looks exactly like Jeanine Garofalo...

Anyway, Doctor Who.

It was not well explained in the first episode, but fans of the old series would know - the plastic people have been seen before, as has the Nestene Consciousness. Jon Pertwee's (the third Doctor) first episode, "Spearhead From Space", was about an invasion of Earth by a hive-mind consciousness which invested plastic with "life", sort of. By infiltrating a plastics manufacturing plant, the consciousness was able to manufacture living plastic which at some trigger point would come to life and take over Earth, killing all humans.

We see these "Autons" as they were called then (but never mentioned in "Rose") again in "Terror of the Autons", a later Pertwee episode, in which the Nestene Consciousness attempts a simpler plan using plastic to take over the Earth.

So most of this back-story was missing from the lightning-paced "Rose" episode. It may have helped a lot of the new audience to know a bit of background.

That's actually one reason the new Doctor Who scored so highly among UK fans - it picked up where Doctor Who had left off, assuming you knew something about the show.

And "End of the World" wasn't bad, but it was still a fairly low point in this new series, so you have some real gems coming up.

"The Unquiet Dead" is one of them, which you hadn't seen yet as of your podcast publication time. Watch it. I think you'll like it.

But even that isn't the best show this season. Keep watching.

By the way, there are 13 episodes in this series, not 6. And a fourteenth if you include "A Christmas Invasion" which is more properly considered the first episode of the NEXT season, since it features the new Doctor, David Tennant, not Eccleston's Doc.

Wait until you see "Dalek", or better yet, "Father's Day" or even better yet, "The Empty Child"/"The Doctor Dances". Oh yes... it's going to be a great next few months!

I just saw your "I'm finally into Dr. Who" and I had to smile. I started watching classic Who back in the early '80s and am really happy that SciFi picked up the new series. Very good stuff. Though I still can't convince my wife to watch the classic stuff. She can't get over the bad special effects, acting, and plot lines. She's more of a BSG fan than Who. Oh well.
