We have some sad news, we talk Christmas and Adam Sandler, and are joined by coworker Carol Housel-Kenney. Grant’s Advent Calendar was mentioned. We have lunch in the middle. Then we have some more sad news.

Whee. I’m back. Promise. Deadlines are achieved, sleep has been accomplished, passive voice is back in full force.

This is my dragoncon podcast, where I intereviewed Dean Haglund because he asked me to.

Show notes. Are there any show notes? Oh, well, I should link to dean, I suspect. :)

Another geek fu will be forthcoming very shortly, back on our regular programming, and announcements of the winner of the t-shirt contest from our sponsor, Split Reason!

Last Geek Music cast! From now on, I’ll be doing features on Jason Adams’ podcast, Random Signal, to introduce music. But we go out with the Beatnik Turtles, and talk about games for 2 players, Firefly, and discussions on why throwing a bunch of geeks in the middle of an ocean is not the best idea, for me, anyway.

Thanks again to our Sponsors to save the Phenomenauts:

My Odeo Channel (odeo/b24793b97f50478b) (yeah, I really messed up Odeo… what’s it to ya?)

Kinda disjointed this podcast. I break my promise about this being my last geek music podcast, but I make it up to you guys who don’t like the music by a) playing it at the end and b) not cheating you out of the essay, which is about Douglas Adams.

The deal with the music is that the Phenomenauts need money - they had their bus do very bad things in Nebraska, which Mike Mennenga tells me is a horror in itself. They are now suffering from several thousands of dollars in repair bills. They and the Epoxies cannot continue the second leg of their tour without these repairs. So, they need help. And I and my sponsor, Split Reason, are willing to reward you for your generosity.

For the next two weeks, the top 5 donators to the Phenomenauts will receive t-shirts from Split Reason, and the top contributor will get a Geek Fu Action Grip t-shirt. Be sure to mention in the paypal transaction that you’re coming from Geek Fu Action Grip, or you won’t be entered into the contest!

Thanks a lot to my sponsor, Split Reason, for helping me help the Phenomenauts.

Other stuff: partnership with Random Signal, geek shower gel, and the mourning of Douglas Adams.

(oh, and I’ll be getting Geek Fu tshirts in soon, so we’ll be able to start selling! Woot!)

Special Guest Jason Adams from Random Signal returns, and we do geek music again. Jason breaks me at the end. You’ve been warned. There’s swearing. There’s Batman Begins spoilers.

I mention that if you do skype me (mightymur), please let me know who you are and why you’re messaging me. Something as simple as “I listen to your podcast and want to say hi.” That’s all I need.

And I forgot to mention (I even had a note for this) that even though I can’t talk about what I’m writing now, I can tell you what I’ve written that has just been published: World of Warcraft the RPG and Cult of Illuminated. And I’ve decided to change my last name to Aardvark because then I won’t be lost in the “et. al.” list of authors on a book.

Nicole started hosting my podcasts at just the right time. When my server was at 91% of used bandwidth, Penny Arcade linked to me after checking out the web comic Alpha Shade (and their podcast, Alpha Rant.)

Thanks, Nicole. And welcome, Penny Arcade readers.

This is another long one, the essay is long and I added a song at the end. I couldn’t resist, and I had permission. I beg you, as a fan, to save the Dragon Page with me, and then I talk about how I’m a total goober when it comes to being a fan. Lastly, Lore sings a song to his favorite woman who rhymes with “pork.”

Please give me feedback regarding the lengths of my podcasts. Do you prefer them shorter, or is it better when I go over 10 minutes?

Links ‘n stuff

I feel like I just did one of these. Then again, it was a crappy week and I’m glad it’s over.

From the Dragon Page blog:

If you all want to help… Then let’s get on Satellite Radio!

We’ve been passing this around a little bit, but if you all really want to help then do this:

Call and send your comments to the following list:

* Sirius Satellite Radio Direct Email
* XM Satellite feedback page
(Click the programs/show request button)

This will get the attention of Satellite providers and take the Dragon Page to a whole new level. It’s time to get this show rolling big.

If you are a science fiction/fantasy fan, you should already be listening to the Dragon Page. If you’re not listening, then start. Once you start, be prepared to get all up in arms, cause they need help.

The Dragon Page is two sf/f radio shows, a two-hour call-in show and a one-hour author interview show. The two hour call-in show was just cancelled due to - get this - being too popular. They were hosted on a conservative talk station and they were getting more popular than some of the other programs, so the station canned it. Now the guys are looking to find another area radio station to hold the call-in show.

I listen to these shows over podcast, and they’re great. Lots of fun, very informative, and they talk about the coolest shit. And hell, it’s a radio SF/F show that you can download from anywhere in the world. You can’t beat that with a stick.

So if you have a moment, drop an email to some of the Arizona radio stations they’re trying to move the show to. It’s an awesome show, really.

The Dragon Page Live Fire Has Been Put Out!

Yes fans, friends, and lovers of all things Michael & Evo. The powers-that-be at KFYI have given us the boot. (For being ‘too’ popular) Yes, you heard me right! Our ratings were too good for Sunday night and we unseated Matt Drudge from his lofty #1 spot. Now, since Matt sells more ad time than us poor lowly geeks, we’re out.

There are a couple other issues involved here, but that is the meat of the justification for dumping a very good show, (namely ours) to be replaced with a less popular show (namely a local girl that has no radio training).

We have become what is known in the industry as “an island”. We are so good at what we do (which is not political talk) that we detract from the shows stacked up against us and interrupt the flow of the lineup. It’s okay to have a niche show like ours on a conservative talk radio station as long as we do not get higher ratings than the shows around us. Unfortunately, we are too good for our own……. good?

Ah hell, we knew it was a temp gig anyway. Still, you would think that if you do well at something you would be rewarded, not canned!

We still have the Cover 2 Cover show that goes out each week and we may expand our podcast as well, but we need to get a local station back soon. We are not able to cover our local scene properly without a local affiliate.

KTAR and KXAM are our two best choices. I have not contacted either as of yet, but will do so soon. Anyone that wants to call/email/fax them to sing our praises is welcome. It can only help us in the end.
