Can't remember if it was 10 or 11, but wanted to thank you for addressing my young readers/scifi question. I DID actually listen to it, but I'm so behind in my podcast listening that I just got to it a couple days ago.

Ultimately, I'd like to find some books he can read himself. His dad had read him the Hobbit and I think they're doing LotR, but other than that, I don't know what his dad has planned. I'm afraid that, other than Star Wars, his dad is not really giving him the geek training he deserves. I managed to find some SW readers that are at his level, which I know he'll like.

I recently bought an H2 for voice work. I'm now considering recording some books as mp3 and emailing them to him. I'll let you know if that goes anywhere.

Hi guys; good to have you back.
Sorry for cutting you off, but I arrived at work 24 minutes in, you see, and <em>that's</em> why you suddenly had to stop existing.
But don't worry, you'll be back.

Jason, I totally identify with that wasted day you described. I am out of work right now and I find myself being lazy in the most boring ways possible. I'm not even playing the games or reading the blogs I didn't have time for when I was working. There are so many things that I always told myself I could accomplish if I didn't have the outside job taking up all my time. I need to take a page from the Mur manual and learn how to manage my time more efficiently.

I'm a bit disappointed. I thought that you said Mustache-CUFFS. So here I am getting all ready for the KinkSpeak and it ends up being Mustache CUPS! Which really did have the potential to be even greater than mustache cuffs. Now, you all went with the cups Olde Tyme mustache paste was placed in. I was thinking sporting, male protective cups... With mustaches attatched... For the genitals. Can you erase what you said and replace it with that? Or, if you'd like, I'll write and you can perform. However it'll be an hour and a half long and Jason will be required to edit it down into 4 minutes.

It was awesome to hear you guys again! I was kinda hoping there'd be some discussion of Glen Tingle and my Playing For Keeps movie cast (http://www.geocities.com/arklemknzy/pfkcast.htm), but I wasn't too suprised considering how much time there was between shows.

Oh, and speaking of D&D, did you guys know the D&D animated seies is available on DVD now? http://www.amazon.com/Dungeons-Dragons-Complete-Bob-Holt/dp/B000JBXY44/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1207210533&sr=1-1

I love the podcast! I discovered Action Grip about 2 days before your last episode... so Morning Show is a pretty good replacement! lol

Anyway, you said in this episode during your tangent on Green Eggs and Ham that you were going to point to the parody "Pink Meth and Crack". Did I miss it somewhere? And I agree completely with the peer pressure argument here.

Thanks Mur & Jason!

Oh man. I just finished listening to this episode today. I cannot accurately express my feelings about it.

But Darth Vader can

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tim5nU3DwIE&feature=related

I'm so sorry guys. It was my mini-dream to join you guys there (my major-dream being acquiring insane wealth, an import car model wife and a house made out of Faberge Eggs).

I dreamt of a magical land of donuts and egg nog covered surfaces surrounded by cameras, scripts and smiling faces. A place filled with humerous zombies, laughing midgets and no one dies. Alas. That magic is gone now and I've died more than a little bit inside... Unless...

SCREW THEM! Let's build a newer, better, more magically awesome land than LuLu! One that dwarves LuLu and makes it cringe in our comedic shadow. One that shocks the masses leaving no garment unsoiled. We can do it! Who's coming with me!

Sorry about the job thing guys. And in honor of your pain, and the discussion, I'm listening to the Life Day song from SW Christmas Special as excerpted on MacBreak Weekly (I predict a DVD release of this sometime before long, probably right after he releases and extended cut of Ep 1 - Now with more Jar Jar).

There are a few things from this episode alone that has forever enriched my life and I'l like to share them with you.

Thing the first: "Shun the non-believer" (Charlie ref.)
Thing the second: The candy mountain theme song (Charlie Ref.)
Thing the third: I can't remember
Thing the fourth: That is the greatest closing song of all time and I'll have to harm my dog tonight is it's not used on the rest of the episodes
Thing the fifth: Robots sustain themselves on children. I'm going to theorize the necessity of such is in order to acquire pristine DNA that hasn't been mutated by the sun, microwaves and hairspray
Thing the sixth: This has beat out Escape Pod and ISBW (sorry Mur) for my favorite podcast in the universe.

That is all. Love,
Brandt

I'm just now listening to this episode and I had to laugh. When you guys mentioned "The most recognised building in the world," but before you said which building, I was already thinking "the John Hancock Building!"
I'm pretty sure the only people who refer to it as the most recognised building are those who have been there and are so amused by that "fact" that they must mock it!

What would you recomend as a good intro to Steampunk? I'd like to check it out, but I know that if I read the wrong book or see the wrong movie I'll get turned of. I learned this the hard way when I recomended Red Mars to a friend who wasn't into sci-fi, and now never will be.

Jason, you look soooo dreamy!
I highly recommend getting the Pumpkin Masters carving kits. I've been using them for years and love them. I will admit that while the tools are a little cheap, I don't feel bad about losing them every year.

Sorry guys, Robert Culp was not in Austin Powers. That was Robert Wagner. Robert Culp co stared with Bill Cosby in I-Spy back in the 1960's. He also appeared on The greatest American Hero and played the lead role in the Harlan Elison written episode of the orginal Outer Limits , "Semon With A Glass Hand".

I'm curious about one thing mentioned during the discussion of high fantasy - what did you have in mind when you talked about authors who had improved on Tolkien? To be fair, I'm a huge Tolkien fan, but I'm not working up to a rant here. I'm just thinking "maybe I'm missing out on some amazing stuff". I'd say that certainly the fantasy genre, and even high fantasy as a sub-genre, have moved on, but I haven't encountered anything that is significantly better than Tolkien's work. (Some things I'd place parallel to it, definitely.) I've got the advantage of being very familiar with the background of his "sub-creation", but I'm not aware of any author who has created a fictional world that is as fully-realized...not in the sense of being detailed in the way the modern world is detailed, but rather as a rich setting for mythic/heroic storytelling.

I’m curious about one thing mentioned during the discussion of high fantasy - what did you have in mind when you talked about authors who had improved on Tolkien? To be fair, I’m a huge Tolkien fan, but I’m not working up to a rant here. I’m just thinking “maybe I’m missing out on some amazing stuff”. I’d say that certainly the fantasy genre, and even high fantasy as a sub-genre, have moved on, but I haven’t encountered anything that is significantly better than Tolkien’s work.
Ideas for vamping:

Should men shave their legs?

What is the best kind of bottled water?

What do/would you call your Ipod/other mp3 playing device?

Who in BSG/Heroes/Lost are you most like?

Who in BSG/Heroes/Lost would you most want to be?

If you could have any robot or creature from any scifi or fantasy story/movie/whatever what would it be and why?

What is your favorite color?

Does icecream have bones?

Jason,

scar cast is an awesome idea! I'll have to pick my best scar story for you (I have three right now, and I just sliced my finger cutting bread so I'm waiting on that scar to develop).

Regarding Robert Culp: He was the FBI agent in The Greatest American Hero!!! I think that gives him a certain amount of geek cred... I don't know that the similarity is all that close (although he does have a prominent chin) but he's definitely old enough to be Bruce Campbell's dad.

Mur, you little minx! You've up and resurrected Geek Fu, albeit in a different form, like the Phoenix rising from the ashes. And we didn't know until my husband checked his feed and saw FOUR episodes! Dude!

Golden Age's Green Lantern's Weaknesses and Limitations.

I listen to morning show in the morning on my way to work, and I actually shouted "no, no, no" during your discussion about green lantern and what can harm him; much to the consternation of the passengers around me on the train...

It is not the processed material vs. natural materials, but that the green lantern's power (as derivied from the starheart) was ineffective against any kind of wood.
Items made of wood could not be affected by energy from the ring made from the original green lantern (The backstory is that Scott found a green lantern made of a metorite and fashioned a ring from the lantern to give him the power, hence the name).

So a rock can be affected by the energy, a wooden arrow would not be. If I made an arrow entirely of wood and shot it at green lantern, he'd better duck quick. Just like when batman made an arrow of kryptonite and shot it at superman.

---

Wow, I just reread that, it's like the uber-geek just came out... maybe that's part of your super-powers: Bring out the uber-geekness in people

Cruel irony! I just started listening, and now must bid farewell to Geek Fu. Well, actually, that isn't true, since there are 103 episodes, most of which I haven't listened to yet. Anyway, good luck with your current projects. You've got yourself one more fan.

Hello Mur. I've known your podcast was out there for a while now, but I never listened to it until I listened to this episode last night. I sort of thought that I wouldn't really enjoy listening to essays, especially since I'm a graduate student so my life is full of lectures and presentations and whatnot. I usually listen to discussion-driven casts like Boot or Landing, you know? But I have to say I really enjoyed this episode, the essay, everything. Considerably more than I expected. So that was a nice surprise, and I wanted to let you know now have a lot of listening to do (fortunately I also have a lot of commuting to do...). So, thanks.

No, I think Jason need not yell at the beginning of each episode, although that could lead into Mur doing a Geek Fu strike on him to start the show... the radio-announcer "count-up" (heh) is goofily endearing.

I like the dynamic - it clearly gives the new iteration it's own identity, but still feels like Geek Fu.

As to D*C, all I'll say is that I agree, and that I was one of loony people who did the stairs in the Hyatt from ground to 19 more than once to dodge the abyss of the elevators. I'm still not convinced that was wise. I think I need... an exercise regimen. Hmmm... needs a snappy name...

Excellent job!

I suspect we'll be hearing tales of Jason's cyst-hole next episode...

These Geek Fu Morning shows are a lot of fun to listen to. I hope you and Jason keep doing them!

I agree with you that how you approach Dragon*Con changes the more often you go. For me it used to be all about what panels and sessions I wanted to attend and now it's more about where will my friends be going so that several of us can all go somewhere together. Tons of fun either way.

While I also don't wait in as many of those long celebrity panel lines as I used to for me it's now usually a Firefly or Farscape panel so it's a great chance to network and find out who listens to the podcasts and if they don't I can give them a business card or a sampler CD. Always pimping the casts!

Thanks Mur and Jason!

Yes, Jason, I think you should yell at the beginning of each show... but only if Mur isn't expecting it ;)

I just had a wild and crazy thought while listening to this... y'all should try to get all the podcasters to do a costume theme one night at the next Dragon*Con. Perhaps all steampunk?

Elevators... yeah... we made the mistake of doing that one whole time (on the way to Sigler's party). 20 minutes to catch the thing then at the second floor it got stuck. Surprisingly none of the obvious comments were made. I think all the guys in there were happy to get stuck next to three women wearing... well, I'm not sure what their costume was - looked like lingerie models to me. The person next to the door eventually figured out how to pry it open. From then on it was stairs... no matter how sticky.

Good show overall, and I love the Carla song at the end. :)

*hug*
You're awesome. I know it sounds silly, but I'm so proud of you for doing what's right for you despite feeling the pressure.
Sometimes letting go of something you love and that loves you in return, is the hardest thing to do.
I'm glad to see that you're returning to your writing. Go get that agent!

I for one will still be cheering for you over at ISBW.

Take care.

Kiki, whose podcast died much faster when the writing got serious

Hi there. I just discovered this podcast, by way of "Escape Pod". While this episode was amusing and informative to the point where I'd probably have benefitted from it in junior high (especially the part about using shampoo), I did want to make the point that for those of us who actually *do* have Asperger's syndrome, the implication that this is intrinsically a negative thing is not necessarily accurate.

While it is true that not all geeks are autistic, and that not all autistics are geeks, some of us *are* autistic geeks -- and happy to be that way. I know that this might sound like I'm being bizarro-PC with this assertion, but I'm really not -- I just wanted to suggest that perhaps in the future, it might be a good idea to remain sensitive to the fact that some listeners, and some geeks, might actually be on the autistic spectrum.

And it can be rather alienating to hear ourselves tacitly excluded by fellow geeks. It's a bit on the disconcerting side to be laughing along with, and agreeing with, people on a podcast only to experience a sudden chill at realizing that these people that sound like they might be friendly toward you actually think you are a member of a group considered to be "unfortunate" and "diseased".

If I end up meeting cool geeky people I certainly don't want them to feel sorry for me on the basis that I have AS! To me, that sort of thing is just as annoying as people feeling "sorry" for me because I don't have (or want) babies, or because I don't accept [deity of choice] as my personal lord and saviour. I have managed to make friends -- a fair number of them -- over the past few years (I am 28 now), and one of the defining characteristics of my friends seems to be that they are very open-minded and quirky themselves, and certainly not prone to pitying me for things like not being able to drive or having to leave noisy restaurants due to sensory overload. In the right environment I can be very happy and functional, and this makes sense, since many of the problems experienced by autistic people are actually very much a result of "unfriendly environments" as opposed to intrinsic deficits. See this paper:

http://www.autismandcomputing.org.uk/dysfunctionalworld.en.html

for a fairly decent description of what I am talking about here.

Now, don't worry -- I am not sitting here wallowing in Being Offended (not really one to play the victim), but I figured that I would make an attempt to treat others as I would want to be treated. Which means that rather than just hoping for opinions to become more informed regarding something of personal concern to me, I ought to take an active role in helping to at least spark people's curiosity regarding a subject that is probably largely unfamiliar to them. That is what I am attempting to do with this comment.

There are a lot of stereotypes floating around out there regarding autism (e.g., "Aren't you all like 'Rain Man'?") and these annoy me just as much as stereotypes regarding, say, girl gamers. Anyone who lives on the fringes in any sense, whether this be due to their neurological wiring or their chosen interests, ought to be able to understand how different it is to actually *be* something as opposed to simply *observe* something. Just being a girl geek is fairly "fringe-y" in and of itself, at least to the point where we are still occasionally subject to accusations of nonexistence! Putting it in perspective like that, hopefully it is clear where I am coming from here.

I have lived with this brain my whole life and know a fair number of others who are similarly-wired, and none of us wish we were neurotypical. And pretty much all of have figured out how to bathe regularly and thoroughly. :P

On a lighter note, the "sausage tent" thing had me in total hysterics. :)

Essays are back! Essays are back (okay, they were back in #96, but I didn't comment there)! And yes, even tho they are essays I've already read (as a longtime fan of KODT. Side note: I was already a listener when I saw that you were writting for KODT... made it nice and easy to have a mental "voice" to associate with the articles. To this day, the characters of KODT will always sound like the voices from the hoodyhoo.com flash cartoons. Damn. That was a side note of a side note. I hate that.), I had always hoped I'd get the chance to hear them. It always just adds that little something-something.
Anyway, thank you for that. And thank you for adding me as a friend on MySpace... after hearing your comments on that (within what? A couple of weeks of my making the request? Even less?) I feel as though that somehow, somewhere, I passed a test I wasn't even aware I was taking. And without even pimping the site (which I thought I had at one point, and that -will- be remedied). Chances are, though, you probably caught the fact that I generally agree with your assessment (reminds me, I need to trim down the list a little).
In any case, keep up the good work(s), Mur!

Hi Mur! You asked for international listeners. I live in Sweden and I am a long-time listener to ISBW and a fairly new listener to Geek Fu. I agree with you regarding MySpace. I have a love/hate relationship with that site. My brother is on there and he's a composer and lyricist so he has quite alot of friends and connections there. I have a page there, too, mainly because of me sitting in the board of Swecasters, a foundation for Swedish podcasters. I really like your voice, very podcast friendly. :) Well, keep up the great work!

Hey. Im a teen. I like purple hair. (I had red hair for about 3 weeks. Close enough). Problem solved!
Also, the Writer's talking link is sort of... funny. The s at the end of Writer's sort of merges with Talking.

Mur, I'll search the site to see if you've already done this but I'd love it if you'd do an devote part of a podcast episode to your findings and tips on Arkham Horror. I've played a very poor session of the game but would love to get it right.

I am also appalled that anyone would suggest that you adopt a certain "persona". I am definitely of the "be yourself AND a mom" persuasion ... they need not be mutually exclusive.

Heck - I personally think your daughter is lucky as hell to have such a ragin' cool supermom. I hope to be just as cool in my daughters' eyes!

Mur, the purple hair looks great on you and you shouldn't have to change who you are just because of pressure from others. If your daughter takes after you at all I would be surprised if she was ever embarrassed by you. Well outside how kids are always embarrased about their parents sometimes that is.

The world would be a lot more boring if everyone conformed to the 'norm'.

Hey Mur, I loved the show,
I was rather dismayed by the comment by your haematologist, though from your response you sound like you already know who and what you are. But as the adult son, ofa woman who was, and still ism a big geek, don't worry about it. I can guarantee you that my mother's Geeks Shirts ,mostly of the tie dies wizard variety) in no way detracted from my mothers authority, thought if you daughter ends up anything like me, she might have problems recognizing you in formal attire.

Any way keep all the great content coming, looking forward to Heaven Season 3.

Great fanfic Nobilis, Mur! And don't worry about sounding crass, it can be frustrating especially if you're doing something for the 3rd or 4th time....and you lost a friend.

I never met Joe...or you for that matter but after listening to you all for over a year, family is the word that comes to mind. And when there's a loss, you just go thru the motion. I will continue to enjoy listening to you all.
